Missions are the game's quests, and the journal is where you keep track of them. You pick missions up from the people and places in the world — the journal remembers them for you.

The compass isn't a command you keep typing — once a mission is tracked, it guides you to each waypoint until the mission is done.
Where you stand
mission list shows what you've accepted and haven't finished, mission current is the one you're actively on, and mission done is your completed history.
You accept missions by talking to the NPCs and interacting with the places that offer them — the journal fills in automatically. Just play the world; the tracking follows.
